If you serve your children a glass of milk with each meal, perhaps you should pour one for yourself, too. Milk supplies a healthy dose of certain essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A. A cup of whole milk supplies micrograms of vitamin A.

One cup of 2 percent milk contains micrograms and one cup of 1 percent milk supplies micrograms of the nutrient. You might know that vitamin A helps maintain the health and function of your eyes, but the nutrient does much more than that, too.

Vitamin A plays a role in the health of your skin and soft tissues and also supports strong bones and teeth. You need plenty of vitamin A to make white blood cells, which help you fight off infections. The vitamin also acts an antioxidant, which means it helps protect your cells from damage that can cause chronic health problems such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

A cup of whole, 1 percent, 2 percent or skim milk supplies about one-third of the 1, milligrams of calcium you should consume each day. The same serving of milk supplies about 32 percent of the vitamin a and skim milk of phosphorus you need on a daily basis.

Phosphorus works closely with calcium to build bone mass and keep your skeletal system strong. Many people are deficient in vitamin D, and fortified milk is one way to boost your intake significantly. Opt for 1 percent or skim milk because these versions are much lower in saturated fat than 2 percent and whole milk. They contain slightly more vitamin A than the fattier milk, but verapamil and its side effects just as much calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D.
